Cozumel is an island in the Mesoamerican Bearrier Reef System (MBRS), the second largest reef system. Cozumel is more accessible to travelers from the western hemisphere due to location and cost. Almost anyone can snorkel but there are tips to make the experience more positive. The focus is mostly on snorkeling since diving content can quickly become too advance, for example: this website will prioritize shallow reefs, and mostly reefs that can be accessed from the shore without a boat.
All forms of ocean recreation have grown and actually, high value reefs, like MBRS, have an estimate worth greater than $908,000 per sq km per year, (Mapping Ocean Wealth Explorer, 2020). As larger concentrations of people become interested in experiencing coastal reefs, I see an opportunity to increase the chances of a positive experience that is also healthful to sensitive ecosystems.
